Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to do the course?

We recommend that you give yourself plenty of time to practice the techniques so that they become second nature to you – so, the earlier the better.  In reality, we’ve taught Mums in the last 2 weeks of their pregnancy and one young woman came to see Sandra on a Saturday and gave birth the following Thursday, and the hypnobirthing techniques worked very well for her.

Can Dads come too?

Absolutely!  This course is designed especially for Mums to come to with a birthing partner – often, but not always, the father.  We teach Dads (or birthing partners) all the hypnobirthing techniques, but specifically how they can provide Mums with the best possible support.  The role of the birthing partner is very important.  This is an area which most other antenatal classes don’t really cover and Dads can be left feeling like a bit of spare part or sometimes even in the way.

Whoever you decide you want to be your birthing partner, they must attend all the classes so that they are completely familiar with the material which means that they can support you through the birth.

It’s not always possible for the father to attend, and some mothers come on their own and hypnobirthing works perfectly well for them too.

Does the fee cover both of us?

Yes, the fee covers the full course for mother and father (or birthing partner)

What else does the fee cover?

Included with the course is a Hypnobirthing manual, a folder of practical handouts and a CD written and recorded by Sandra Handford, which provides great continuity throughout the course, during your practice sessions at home and for the birth itself.

Also included is the ‘de-briefing’ session.  We will arrange a day when couples can meet up with the rest of their group to show off their new babies and to catch up with each other.  For those parents who want to talk through their experience in more detail, a one-to-one session can be arranged.

I can't do both days together

If you can't manage both days of a course, just choose the first day from one course, and the second from any of the other courses.  You do need to do the days in the correct order, but the easiest thing is to contact us and we’ll work out the most convenient way.  The main thing is for you to learn these wonderful hypnobirthing techniques and so have a natural and gentle birth.

What should I wear?

The aim of the course is to relax, so wear comfortable clothes.

Do I need to bring anything with me?

All learning materials are provided, so just bring yourself and prepare to relax and have fun.

How many couples are there in a group?

The size of the groups vary, we aim to keep them small and personal.  We encourage couples to mix and learn from each other.  Some couples make friendships in these groups that last for years as their children grow up and become friends too.  Having a support network when you have small children is vital and is something we strongly encourage.

If I’m hypnotised, will I remember the birth?

Most definitely!  The whole point of hypnobirthing is to have a drug free, natural birthing experience where you are calm and focussed, so that you can remember this amazing experience easily.

One of the myths of hypnosis is that the client won’t remember anything about the session.  But hypnosis is simply a state of mind where the client is deeply relaxed and focussed on their thoughts and to block out unwanted distractions.

Does Hypnobirthing really work?

Hypnobirthing techniques have existed for nearly 30 years and for the vast majority of people it offers a far more controlled and natural approach to childbirth, the hypnosis techniques learned can also be applied to later stressful situations and whilst for a small number of people it may not be 100% effective everyone benefits. Also many NHS authorities are investing in hypnobirthing research as a complimentary facility which means that they believe that it can be a much more effective approach for mother and baby.

If you have any questions that we haven’t answered, then please call or drop us an email via the contact page and we’ll do our best to answer it for you.
